Speech Milestones for Children

Birth to 3 Months
  • Coos and makes gurgling sounds.
  • Turns head toward sounds.
4 to 6 Months
  • Babbles with consonant-vowel combinations (e.g., “ba-ba”).
  • Responds to name and sounds.
7 to 12 Months
  • Imitates speech sounds.
  • Uses gestures like waving or pointing.
  • Says first words (e.g., “mama,” “dada”).
1 to 2 Years
  • Vocabulary grows to about 50 words.
  • Starts combining two words (e.g., “more juice”).
  • Understands simple commands.
2 to 3 Years
  • Vocabulary expands to 200–300 words.
